A new layout and some posts equals big boost in traffic

Over at my personal blog I have implemented a new theme from Yichi. Which caught my eye because of the stunning artwork used.

As is often the case with themes, it was broken in Internet Explorer due to invalid HTML and a in need of a CSS rewrite. But thats the type of thing I enjoy and the rewards have been worth it.

Some very unusual results

Having worked periodically on our chosen keywords and the site in general over the last six to eight weeks we have found some unexpected and somewhat disappointing results when querying the top three search engines. Now I admit there is a lot of work still to be done, but lets take a look as to where we stood this morning as opposed to this evening!

no contract broadband deals

I am always being asked ‘what’s the best broadband package?’ and the resulting conversation usually involves the following objections -

I don’t want to be tied in for twelve months.
How much ‘download allowance’ will I need for a bit of surfing, a few emails and a few music downloads… oh and I play World of Warcraft for about 2-3 hours most nights and err I love youtube etc. etc.
How fast is 8Mb broadband?

search engines

Well its very early days, however we have hit number one spot for the key word term ‘digital media works’ in MSN live search and are currently fifth in Yahoo. We are nowhere in Google at this stage, but I think that will all change within the next six weeks (based on googles crawl rate). So our content needs to be all present and correct within that time frame, keywords need to be optimised as each page is completed.

sitemap xml

This morning I have added a sitemap.xml document to the root of the website. This, as the name suggests, provides search engines with a detailed map of the pages in the site along with data regarding when they where last updated etc. You can read more on sitemaps at the sitemaps page.

I have also submitted the sitemap to google for crawling and indexing, however I have no idea of when the googlebot will arrive to do its work. You can read more about googlebot on our google page.

site makeover

I have finally found the time, between client jobs, to bring my own site up to date. There is still plenty of work to do and lots of SEO work to get it noticed however it now looks as though somebody lives here….

My plan is to take an hour a day to get the content up to scratch and plan my SEO campaign. Then to run that campaign over a three month period, keeping a log right here of the progress.
